On Sunday, April 25, Earth Day Network will organize a massive climate rally on The National Mall to demand Congress pass strong legislation. The Climate Rally will include notable speakers Reverend Jesse Jackson, film director, James Cameron, AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, Olympic gold medalist, Billy Demong, producer, Trudie Styler, author, Margaret Atwood, NFL player and television personality, Dhani Jones, environmental photographer Sebastian Copeland and many more.

The Climate Rally will also feature live music from Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Jimmy Cliff, Passion Pit, Bob Weir, Willie Colón, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Booker T, Honor Society and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

Earth Day Cleanup at the National Zoo

Come to the National Zoo to celebrate Earth Day! National Zoo staff and volunteers will work together to improve the health of the Zoo’s ecosystem by picking up aluminum cans, food wrappers, and other litter in a wooded area of the Zoo near the Connecticut Avenue entrance. Not only will you get the chance to help the planet, but you'll also venture to a place in the Zoo not often seen by the public eye.

Register by 8 a.m. in Parking Lot A, which is adjacent to the cleanup site. Volunteers should wear sunscreen, bug spray, appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.

Volunteers are encouraged to take public transportation to the Zoo and enter at Connecticut Avenue. Those who drive can park in Lot A.

Recycle at the Zoo
FONZ has partnered with an outside company to collect and recycle Zoo visitors' cell phones, batteries, and accessories. For many working cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, calculators, Apple laptop computers, gaming devices, and external drives—FONZ will get money to support conservation! All other devices will be recycled under strict environmental guidelines, keeping hazardous materials from reaching landfills and harming human and environmental health.

Bring all materials to be recycled to the front desk in the Visitor Center.

Anacostia Earth Day 2010 - River Cleanup and Celebration

In Manassas, you’ll be serving the community of Georgetown South. Georgetown South reflects the surge of rich diversity that has changed the face of Manassas in just a few short years. The 10-mile wide city, with its 35,000 residents and Historic Civil War era "Old Town", now has public schools that are 44% Hispanic, 33% Caucasian, 17% African-American and 6% Asian/Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic).

Of 860 townhomes built solid and firewall-safe 45 years ago in Georgetown South, many need a facelift – cleaning yards, fixing broken fences, putting on a fresh coat of paint, planting flowers. Last spring, residents started a Neighborhood Watch and donated tools to help youth mow lawns and make repairs. An army of 1 by Youth volunteers can build on these efforts by working side-by-side with residents and encouraging them with the power of what youth and faith can do in just one day.

The residents of Georgetown South look forward to working with 1 By Youth volunteers to build neighborhood pride and celebrate their diversity!

Roots & Shoots Earth Day

Junior/Parent Tournament

Golfers seven years and up are invited to play in the Junior-Parent Tournament at Burke Lake Golf Course from 8 a.m. until noon. Teams of two compete in an 18-hole scramble format. Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place teams in two age divisions: Adult/Jr. 7 to 12 years; Adult/Jr. 13 to 17 years. Prizes are also given for closest to the pin contests. This tournament is limited to first 48 teams. The rain date is May 1. The fee is $60 per team which includes lunch. To make a reservation, call 703-323-1641.

The 6th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo is scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington, DC, on April 24 - 25, 2010. This event was created to bring together professional scientists, engineers, and business leaders around innovations designed to advance economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The Expo showcases the innovative designs of the P3 student teams addressing alternative energy technologies, collection, purification and distribution of water, agricultural practices to reduce pesticide run-off, new technologies for green buildings and many more approaches to improve society's sustainability. In addition, it provides a forum for the government, non-profit and business community to demonstrate their diverse approaches to sustainability.

2nd Annual Earth Day @ Loudoun Family Festival

Scott York, Honorary Co-Chair of the event and Chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors said the Willow Creek Farm venue will offer a backdrop that will truly motivate people to make a difference. “We all can benefit from education and direction about the evolving focus of wildlife conservation. This venue truly captures the essence of our new eco-friendly world and its right in own backyard in the Broadlands,” said York.
